Google DeepMind s AlphaGo AI made headlines last year after defeating Go world champion Lee Se-dol in a five match series. Lee Se-dol managed to gain one victory against AlphaGo but the AI won the tournament overall. Google DeepMind is taking things up a notch as its AlphaGo AI will be battling against the current Go champion Ke Jie in a match of three games. This match will be the highlight of a five-day event called the Future of Go Summit which will take place in China s Wuzhen from May 23 to May 27. Go is essentially a strategy board game wherein the goal is to capture more territory than the opponent. Go is considered the oldest board game, invented in China more than 2,500 years ago. AlphaGo will compete against Ke Jie in a one-on-one match of three games which Google says will push AlphaGo to perhaps beyond its limits. Google says that Ke Jie is known for his excellent reading and unshakable confidence and is also known to have a finely balanced style of playing with intuitions of when to play boldly or exercise caution.
AlphaGo works by combining two techniques of artificial intelligence and learns with Monte Carlo Tree Search to simulate millions of games looking for outcomes and learning from those to simplify its game strategy. Google says that AlphaGo s biggest strength is the unique perspective it brings to every game played. AlphaGo s strategy is said to be lacking of preconceptions which makes it find the most effective line of play. Speaking about the Future of Go Summit , Google DeepMind is collaborating with the China Go Association and Chinese Government for the event. The five-day event will be host to AlphaGo, China s top Go players, and leading AI experts as well. In addition to the most anticipated match between AlphaGo and Ke Jie, there will be other tournaments as well involving the AI and top Go players. There will be a Pair Go event wherein Chinese professional Go players will compete against each other but with one AlphaGo each taking turns to make moves. Team Go event will be a game between AlphaGo and a five-player team which will comprise of top Chinese Go players.
Apart from Go, there will be a forum as well to discuss the future of AI involving China s leading experts in the field. The forum will focus on how AlphaGo has created new knowledge about the oldest of games, and how the technologies behind AlphaGo, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, are bringing solutions to some of the world s greatest challenges into reach.
