Only a few days ago Google announced the Chromecast HDMI dongle in a bid to gain a foothold on the living room, but the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company had actually demoed an Android powered set top box that had a camera and motion sensor. Reportedly, the device was shown off at CES, by Andy Rubin himself before he quit the Android division. Originally, the product was supposed to be unveiled at Google I/O, but that never happened. So, it s not known whether the product has been killed or not. When showcased the product had all the abilities of the Chromecast and could stream YouTube, and run NetFlix.
This is not the first time we are hearing about a set top box running Android. We have already seen demo s from companies like Qualcomm and Broadcom that have had a set top box with Android baked in. In fact, Google itself has the Google TV which is a quasi set top box that runs on Android.
