Despite being the world’s largest and most used search engine, the homepage of Google Search is (and has always been) quite minimal in appearance. However, there are times when it looks quite different from the usual, thanks to Google Doodles.

Google Doodles, which are temporary alterations of Google’s logo that are displayed to commemorate special events or anniversaries of famous personalities have become one of the most distinct aspects of Google Search’s homepage. And the newest is sure to delight every space aficionado out there.

The latest Google Doodle is a side-scrolling one, and it illustrates the amazing cosmic event known as ‘Geminids.’ A meteor shower caused by the 3200 Phaethon asteroid, the meteors from Geminids are usually seen in December and peak around December 13-14. They appear to come from a radiant (the point in the sky from which the paths of meteors appear to originate) in the constellation Gemini, which is what they are named after.

As for the doodle, its primary image shows an illustration of our solar system, with the Sun (complete with a smiley face and eyes) making up the second ‘O’ in the logo. The Earth is visible in the lower-right corner of the doodle. The other images in sequence (viewable by clicking on the arrow button on either side of the doodle) show Geminids’ path through Earth’s atmosphere. As Phaethon’s orbit causes it to get closer to the Sun, the massive amount of heat causes it to fracture, leaving a trail of debris in the path.

Just like most Google Doodles, this one can also be shared via Email, Google+, Facebook, or Twitter. All you have to do is click on the share icon at the doodle’s bottom-right corner and select the relevant social media network’s icon.
