Verily, it seems to be the day of tearful departures. Barely had we finished wringing our hands over the end of the MacBook, than news trickles in that Google has decided to bring down the curtain on Google Labs, the source for prototype versions of many products including the likes of Google Docs, Google Maps and Google Reader. And no, this is not a rumour – Google announced the news itself on its blog, saying: “While we’ve learned a huge amount by launching very early prototypes in Labs, we believe that greater focus is crucial if we’re to make the most of the extraordinary opportunities ahead. In many cases, this will mean ending Labs experiments—in others we’ll incorporate Labs products and technologies into different product areas.” There is a silver lining, though – many of the Lab products that are available as apps on the Android Market will continue to be available and there are no plans to change in-product experimentation as seen in Gmail Labs or Maps Labs. “We’ll continue to experiment with new features in each of our products” – says the official Google Blog post. That is good indeed, but we cannot help but feel just a little sad. What a day this is turning out to be. Also Read - Google might launch its first smartwatch next year with these features
