After updating its Allo messaging app, Google appears to be bringing a set of changes to its video calling Duo app. The app was launched alongside Allo late last year, and comes with a ‘Knock Knock’ feature that allows you to see a preview video of the caller. As part of Google Duo version 16.0, the app gets a range of improvements, including UI changes on Android O. The version 16.0 brings a new toggle in settings for all users, along with support for Notification Channels for the upcoming Android version. The change log includes a new type of notification for ‘special events and topics’. This feature aims to give ‘suggestions on when to use Duo’. The custom notification channel is specific to Android O and will let you fully customize the app’s notifications. You can easily customize sounds, vibrations, notification lights, and more for Google Duo running on Android O compatible devices. A third change to the app adds toggles within the Settings panel for contact updates, new in Duo, and the special events and topics section. Some of the other changes discovered by AndroidPolice include an additional category for call notifications. This is not the same as the popup notification that appears when you receive a call.
The report further notes that some of the changes to the interface are being rolled out in a phased manner and might not show up for everyone even after updating. For example, the Audio/Video toggle is not locked to the top of the screen after the update and is now attached to a draggable contacts panel. However, as the change is not visible to everyone, you might still the toggle at the top panel, but it is now fixed and won’t auto-hide. Additionally, the Contacts list will show phone or video camera icon next to each contact as you switch modes. Again, this feature is not visible to everyone.
