Google employees are reportedly enraged that the AI built by them is being used by the US Department of Defense (DoD). The AI is said to be used by DoD to analyze the massive troves of video footages captured by its military drones. The use of Google-developed AI by Department of Defense is part of Project Maven, also referred to as Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team (AWCFT) that started last April. The project approved by US government is meant to use new technologies like big data and machine learning tech to advance the capabilities of DoD in the field. The Project Maven relies on Google’s AI to identify vehicles and other objects in the footage captured by drones. Earlier these footage were manually analyzed by humans but since these unmanned drones are recording more video than in the past, it has been deemed impossible for humans to analyze them all.
Google has confirmed that it is providing the Department of Defense with APIs for its TensorFlow machine learning system. The search giant revealed that its tech is being used by DoD to help with object recognition on unclassified data and “is for non-offensive uses only.”
With data becoming the most precious form of resource available with countries and tech companies, it is inevitable that technologies like big data and machine learning will be used by military forces as well. TensorFlow is the underpinning technology that enables facial recognition and image search system in Google Photos.
AI and machine learning are set to become the driving force for every form of technology going forward. It is already being deployed and distributed to power small applications and runtime within services and with the advancement in processing, the technology is only likely to become more expansive.
