Google engineer says OnePlus’ USB Type-C adaptor could damage your device; company refutes claims

Benson Leung, a Google engineer is on a quest to weed out crappy USB Type-C cables and adapters off the Internet, and his latest target is OnePlus USB Type-C adapter. Leung says that OnePlus adapter is not compliant with standard specifications, a claim refuted by the Chinese company. Don’t buy this #USB #TypeC adapter for your Chromebook Pixel or Nexus 6P/5X phone. It uses the wrong identifier resistor, Leung wrote in a Google+ post. A quick look at the post thread shows the reason behind Leung s claim. He says that OnePlus adapter doesn t allow power delivery of up to 3A, which is the standard for USB Type-C specced devices like the LG Nexus 5X or the Huawei Nexus 6P. When connecting to such devices, the device will attempt to draw 3A current despite the adapter not supporting it, thereby potentially damaging the device.

“Having a weaker than 3A charger is actually a risk factor because the device being charged will always try to charge at 3 and if the older adapter can’t handle 3A, that is when it might be damaged,” he writes.

BGR India reached out to OnePlus, but the company unsurprisingly defends its adapter. “The OnePlus USB Type-C cable and adapter are compliant with USB 2.0 and Type-C 1.0 protocols. They can safely be used with the OnePlus 2 to transfer data and charge the phone,” the company said.

Leung isn t just taking on OnePlus, but has his sights set on other third-party accessories as well. Earlier this month, he took a look at different USB Type-C cables and adapters available on, and found that most of them were not up-to-spec.

OnePlus USB Type-C adapter is a must-have accessory if you have bought the OnePlus 2. It s the same case if you have bought the Nexus 5X, which features a USB Type-C port. With USB Type-C still a rarity in the smartphone market, most of us have a microUSB cable, which is why this accessory is a necessity. OnePlus had launched the micro USB to Type-C adapter on Amazon India for Rs 699. The accessory however is not available at the time of filing this article.
