Earlier today, reports surfaced online claiming that Google was planning to officially launch its Home and Home Mini speakers in India soon. Now the search giant has sent out media invites for a launch event in Delhi on April 10. While the invite doesn’t explicitly mention so, Google is widely believed to be unveiling its smart products on the same day. The report about the imminent launch had cited communication by Redington India sent to its retail partners. Further, TrueTech also found a bunch of evidence on a Google Home Mini unit that was imported from the US. For one, the entire settings menu suddenly had support for Indian English. Secondly, under Account preferences in the Google Home app, some major music streaming services in India including Saavn and Gaana had been listed. Until now, users who imported the Home and Home Mini speakers to India only had the option to choose between Google Play Music and Spotify, and Netflix in the video section. The report however does mention that the speakers still don t allow you to interact with these apps using voice yet. Third, the speakers have also received a Voice Match option when Home Mini s language was switched to English (India). Which means, like Google demonstrated at I/O 2017, the feature will allow multiple people to have their Google accounts connected to the Home device to get more personalized results after teaching the Google Assistant their respective voice models.
Google Assistant has had support for English (India) and Hindi on Android devices for a while, and they work well on them, the Home and Mini speakers though have not been so seamless with the language. Possibly under testing, with English (India) selected as its default language, the Google Home Mini seldom didn t even respond to a query, while some of the recently added features, including Home s ability to show visual results on Chromecast-connected TV, didn t work, the blog reports.
