The debut of the Google Home and Google Home Mini will charge up the smart speaker market in India where only Amazon’s Echo line of speakers have been made available recently. To counter the Amazon speakers, Google will require them to be aggressively priced. For reference, the Google Home is priced at $129 which translates to approximately Rs 8,400 and the Google Home Mini is priced at $49, which is approximately Rs 3,200.
In a market like India, IoT devices are still at a nascent stage, owing to the affordability issues. Even as the Amazon Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Dot devices are made available in the country, the use cases are quite limited as smarter homes are not fully commercial. The Google smart speaker range is likely to see more fans given the larger user base Android already has and the support for Google Assistant is built-in in a majority of devices.
According to recent reports, the Google Home range could support music streaming services including Saavn and Gaana. It is worth mentioning that Amazon recently expanded its Prime Music service to its users in India and so far, it has received a positive response. With Google’s tie-up with Indian services will allow users a wider access to content in addition to Google Play Music and Spotify. Interestingly, it has been also reported that there will be support for Netflix as well.
It remains to be seen if the Google Home and Google Home Mini are able to gain skills, other than controlling lights and sending texts, which are customized for the Indian users. As of now, it is expected that the smart speakers will come with support for English (India).

If past reports are anything to go by, the debut of Google Home and Home Mini will be the first step for Google to expand its product portfolio. The company is reportedly also looking at introducing its Google Wi-Fi mesh routers. The interest of brands in the Indian market is palpable as companies are going beyond just smartphones and laptops. Recently, Xiaomi announced its plans of expanding its product portfolio in the Indian market, and started off by launching its Mi TVs in the country.
