Countering Amazon’s Echo line of smart speakers, Google today introduced its Google Home and Home Mini in India. The smart speakers are powered by Google Assistant, and are voice controlled. The Google Home is priced at Rs 9,999, while the Google Home Mini will retail at Rs 4,499. The new smart speakers will be exclusive to Flipkart if you want to buy them online. It will be available for sale at 2:00PM. Offline, it will be available via Croma Retail, Reliance Digital, Vijay Sales, Sangeetha and Poorvika.
One of the biggest advancements since the arrival of digital assistants is the addition of hardware supporting the commands. Smart speakers, which are the first step towards building a smart ecosystem of products, work as facilitators for a seamless conversation between you and other gadgets around you. The Google Home was first launched in 2015, while the Home Mini arrived in international markets last year.
The jar-shaped Google Home features a touch panel on top. There are indicators on the top to show you if the speaker is listening to you. Although the speaker is meant to be an ‘always-listening’ device, you can use the mute button at the back to keep it from triggering your Google Assistant when you don’t want it to.
The Google Home requires Wi-Fi network. It supports both iOS and Android platforms. The built-in speaker includes 2” driver and dual 2” passive radiators, which aid in far-field voice recognition for hands-free use. It weighs less than 500 grams, and is available in color choices of white and slate fabric.
Google Home Mini
Complementing the Google Home is the Home Mini speaker. As the name suggests, it is a small coaster-like device that can be placed anywhere in the house, and answer your queries. It is essentially a smaller, similarly powerful version of the Google Home. You can set reminders, ask questions, play songs, ask it to cast TV shows, and more. You can choose to connect a Google Home Mini with the Google Home if you have large spaces where you need assistance. The Google Home Mini is available in color choices of Chalk, Charcoal, and Coral.

How to use
The Google Home allows you to have a conversation with it. You can use the device to set reminders, play music, control connected gadgets around you, and more. All you need to say is, “Hey Google,” followed by the instructions. You can say, “Hey Google, what’s the weather outside”, or “Hey Google set a reminder for buying groceries at 10 tomorrow”. These are only some of the phrases you can use to ask questions or instruct commands to the smart speaker.
