At the Google I/O 2017 conference, the second annual Google Play Awards took place where a total of 12 apps won across different categories. This year, Google added four new categories for the Google Play Awards. Google shortlisted the app nominees for the competition last month and judged on the basis of their ratings on Play Store, performance, and the regularity of their updates. The winning apps were both paid and free, ranging from categories like gaming, VR, AR, startup, TV experience and more.
Going through the list of the winning Android apps, one may not be familiar with most of them. Some of the apps may not have appeared on the Google Play homepage as well. Let’s have a look at the 12 apps that managed to emerge victorious among the 2.8 million apps on Google Play Store. Under the Standout Indie category, Mushroom 11, a puzzle-filled game won the award. This game is packed with “eerily beautiful visuals” along with “the ethereal music of electronic legend The Future Sound of London.” The game is priced at Rs 340 on Play Store. ‘Hooked’ as the name suggests, gets you hooked with chat stories that are “gripping, edge-of-your-seat thrillers.” Hooked won the awards for best Standout Startup, and is available for free to download.
Under the Best Android Wear Experience, Runtastic Running & Fitness took the prize. The app which is available for free, offers a voice coach, yearly running goal, shoe tracking, and many more fitness-related features. Redbull TV grabbed the prize for the Best TV Experience on Android. The app focuses on showing the content of sports events, music festivals, films and, documentaries. Under Best VR Experience, Virtual Virtual Reality won, and WOORLD took the prize for Best AR Experience. The VR app is priced at Rs 290, while WOORLD is available for free. Animal Jam – Play Wild won in the category of Best App For Kids. Available for free, the game lets kids experience life as an animal character in a world filled with 3D visuals. In the gaming category, Hearthstone took the prize for Best Multiplayer Game, while TRANSFOMRERS: Forged to Fight won overall as the Best Game. Hearthstone is a multiplayer card game where one can use cards to “sling spells, summon minions, and seize control of an ever-shifting battlefield”. Transformers, was once every kid’s favorite cartoon show, and as a game lets you battle it out as an Autobot, Decepticon, Predacon and Maximal. IFTTT won for being the Best Accessibility Experience app. It is available for free and works as a platform for several apps and services. It also allows users to control multiple apps with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. ShareTheMeal- Help children won as the Best Social Impact app. The app, under the UN, allows people donate to feed children and this app has managed to feed 12 million kids so far. Coming to the highlight of the Google Play Awards 2017, the best app was bagged by Memrise which is language learning app. Memrise helps people learn new languages through variety of games, chatbots and has over 30,000 native speaker videos.
