Google is all set to host its annual developer conference, I/O 2018, which begins today on May 8 and will continue till May 10 2018. The keynote will take place at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, and Google is expected to reveal details about the next mobile OS, Android P, along with Google Assistant, Wear OS and other products.

Besides the usual announcements, we are also likely to see new developments in the world of artificial intelligence and augmented reality. Google has already baked AI in the form of Google Assistant into Android and Augmented Reality in the form of AR Core. At the I/O 2018 developer conference, Google is expected to reveal new features of Google Assistant and other products that it has been working on.

How to watch Google I/O 2018 live stream

Like every year, Google will be live streaming the I/O 2018 keynote, which kicks off at 10AM PT (10:30PM IST). The keynote will be delivered by CEO Sundar Pichai and will be live streamed on dedicated I/O website here – Alternatively, you can also download Google I/O 2018 app on your Android or iOS device, or head over to to watch the event live.

Here is what we expect to see from the search giant at the developer conference today.

Android P

Google has already released the first developer preview of Android P detailing features that will be seen on the next version of its mobile operating system. At I/O 2018, Google is expected to detail what Android P has in store for its vast developer ecosystem and most importantly, detail what system level changes that are expected this year.

Android Nougat was a major overhaul while Android Oreo strengthened the core last year. With Android P, Google seems to be going after another major overhaul with a new gesture support similar to iPhone X and native support for notched display. The software is also expected to bring a visual design change and more unified settings option. Later this week, Google might announce the second developer preview of Android P and fingers crossed for the public preview as well.

Google Assistant and Google Home

Apart from Android, Google Home smart speakers and Google Assistant powering them is shaping up to be Google’s secret sauce for the future of computing. Google recently told it has over 1 million ‘Actions’ supported by its smart speakers and at I/O 2018, we might see more investments and features being added to the assistant.

Google might save the hardware announcement for October event but we might see new hardware from its partners. One of the key thing to watch would be whether Google talks about smart speakers with integrated display to rival Amazon Echo Show and Echo Spot.

Core Google Apps

If the past few I/O are any indicator then expect Google Photos to be a star at the show. Google Photos is arguably one of the most intelligent platform for saving photos and its ability to use machine learning to create animated videos and styled photos and Google should add new features to the service.

The reports suggest Google is planning a major overhaul for Google News this year. Google News is said to be revamped for both desktop and mobile and includes features seen on Google Newsstand. This will be Google’s effort to compete with Apple News, which will soon gain features drawn from Texture.

Wear OS

Google recently rebranded Android Wear as Wear OS early this year and I/O 2018 could be an attempt to save its wearable platform. Among key things, Google is likely to shed more light on Wear OS and detail how it plans to shape the platform going forward.

Artificial Intelligence

Let’s just say that Google leads the pack as the strongest advocate of Artificial Intelligence. At I/O 2018, Google CEO Sundar Pichai could detail what the search giant has been doing with AI and how it enhances the service. Pichai could talk about AI in services like Google Assistant, Google Translate and other products.

He might also detail AI is empowering new products including its Waymo self-driving car unit and DeepMind Lab, which managed to beat world’s best Go player. If F8 is anything of an indicator then Google will also talk about ethical use of AI.
