Google Maps has always been the go to platform when it comes to finding places, and navigating busy streets. At I/O 2018, Google announced how it plans to make it even better with new features like native integration of the camera application. With the update, Google Maps will become more assistive and personal, helping users figure out what to eat, drink, and do. In the coming months, Google Maps will stop showing an endless scrolling list of recommended restaurants, and instead offer an even more personalized experience. The first major change coming to the application is a redesigned Explore tab, which Google says will be your “hub for everything new and interesting nearby”. Google says the new explore section has been designed in a way that will track your progress against each list and say if you have crossed four of the top restaurants in a particular place then it will show that you have six more to try. It also comes with a new section called Your Match where it will display your match when you tap on any food or drink venue.

Google describes Your Match as a number that suggests how likely you are to enjoy a place, and offer reasons explaining the rationale behind that suggestion. The match uses machine learning to generate that number and uses factors including knowledge about “a business, the food and drink preferences you ve selected in Google Maps, places you ve been to, and whether you ve rated a restaurant or added it to a list.”

Google Maps is also getting native camera integration, which will instantly show you which direction you need to head in order to reach your destination. With this feature, you will no longer need to walk along a direction and see if the blue dot follows in that same direction. It will also use Augmented Reality to show nearby places. Google says it is using Visual Positioning System alongside GPS to precisely locate your device and landmarks around you.

Other features being added to Maps include improved group planning and a “For you” tab. With for you tab, Google wants to offer latest things happening in the areas around you. Google Maps also gets Assistant integration within navigation menu with the update. The features being announced at I/O 2018 will roll out globally on Android and iOS in the coming months.
