Gboard, Google‘s stock keyboard for Android, has begun testing dynamic navigation bar colors based on current keyboard theme. The search giant is testing a feature where the software navigation bar’s background will automatically get colored depending on the keyboard theme. So, the idea here is to have a white background for light-colored keyboard themes and black for dark-colored themes.

The feature was spotted being in works by XDA Developers and now, Google has rolled out additional updates to the Gboard app. In the updated release of Google’s keyboard app, the company has added the feature where the navigation bar is now dynamically colored based on the current keyboard theme, regardless of the color of your theme. The feature was discovered by XDA Recognized Developer Quinny899 and when enabled, it colors the navigation bar background according to color scheme of the keyboard.

This feature does not work with custom images set as background on Gboard. According to XDA Developers, the feature only worked on Google Pixel devices and not on other devices from brands like the OnePlus 6. In our own testing, we could not see the dynamic navigation bar feature on beta version of running on Pixel 2 XL. Ideally, the feature should work across devices once it becomes available as part of public release.

However, one cannot rule out the fact that Google might be intending to keep this feature to work only on the Google Pixel devices. It is not immediately clear when Google plans to roll out the feature officially for Android users. The feature also seems limited to Android and not make its way to the iOS counterpart. One can only hope that Google does not scrap it before rolling out to a larger audience.

Google has been on a spree to add new features to its keyboard app over the past few months. The company is working to bring Gboard to Chrome OS and is planning add features like OCR, auto darkness mode to the application. It recently added a new feature on iOS where users can type in morse code. The app also gained functions like spell check, floating keyboard and might soon introduce smart replies function on apps like WhatsApp, Snapchat and Facebook.
