Google has been rapidly updating all its apps to meet the guidelines of “Google Material Theme” or “Material Design 2”. It recently brought the design language to Google Home app and now it is the turn of Keep Notes (previously known as Google Keep) to get that same treatment.
The update is being rolled out in a staged manner but if you want, there is an option to download the APK and get the new design. As one would expect from Material Design, the new Keep Notes app gets a new monochrome elements that have been standard part of this design language. The new look for Keep Notes can be described as modern and attractive that retains the functionality of the older version. Google is offering the app a fresh coat of paint as its embraces Material Design throughout its operating system.
As Android Police notes, only the blue thumbtack icon in the corner of pinned items seems to have been lost in the process of this redesign. The pinned category header is still there so users will be continue to be able to pin and access their notes anytime.
With the update, the note titles get changed to Google/Product Sans while the note content is being replaced from older serif Roboto Slab font to sans-serif Roboto. The grey background of the application is being replaced with a white color and noted are denoted only by a border and not a contrasting background. If you use the application on a smartphone running Android 9 Pie then it is easier to observe that the icons are similar to that of core operating system. There is also a new avatar shortcut at the top right, which makes it easier to switch between Google accounts.
The app also brings changes to the navigation drawer with the app dropping the header altogether, losing your name, email, avatar and G+ background in the process. This could be the way forward for other apps as well. There is solid white background everywhere and minimal interface in the way of note-taking. The update, which brings a new look to Keep Notes, does not change the version number in a big way.
