Google has rolled out a major update to its Google Keyboard application for Android. The latest update brings one-hand typing mode along with several new features such as full emoji support and improved layout. One-hand typing support is likely to help users with large-screen smartphones. To enable the one-hand feature, users need to hold their fingers down on the comma. Swipe to the one-handed mode icon, the keyboard changes its size. To return to the normal sized keyboard, tap on the full screen icon appearing on the right. The improved gesture controls are the biggest update to the Google Keyboard app. Now you can use gestures to delete words. To do so, you need to swipe left on the delete key to highlight and delete text by lifting finger. Also, Google makes it easier to edit words letter by letter, along with controlling cursors.
New one-hand mode and gesture typing features make the Google Keyboard app at par with the likes of popular third party keyboard apps such as Swiftkey. It is worth noting that Microsoft s latest Word Flow keyboard app also comes with gesture typing and one-hand typing support.
Google says it has made some improvements to auto-correction and next-word predictions. Also, users don t need to manually add words to dictionary. Google keyboard will now learn your words to allow you to gesture type it or find it in suggestions.
“Glide through letters with Gesture Typing to enter words – just lift your finger to finish a word and gesture again, no spacebar required. Compose text on-the-go with Voice Typing, Google says while elaborating the new features.
Moreover, Google has also tweaked the UI of the application. Now, users can add borders to keys or simply hide them. Earlier borders were hidden by default.
