Google announced late last night that it is releasing an update for the Android Wear smartwatch software. The new update, which is designed keeping all its six Android watches in mind, brings visual customization and other improved functionalities. The company, for the first time, is allowing users to download custom watch faces from Google Play Store. In addition, there are several more handy features including new sunlight and theater modes that offer varied brightness in accordance with the lighting outside. The company says that it collaborated with several designers and brands including Porche, Surfline, Hugh Turvey, and Rebecca Minkoff among others. Google has also released an official Watch Face API, which encourages independent designers to take advantage of and create and upload more watch faces. Motorola, LG and Samsung already ship their smartwatches with preinstalled custom watch faces. Though, it is possible to change them, this is good news for consumers, who will now have more customization options at their disposal. The new version also offers the ability to bring back an accidentally swiped-away notification card. A very handy addition, the absence of which had made many users miffed. The move signals that the company is slowly opening up its Android Wear platform. Unlike the Android mobile operating system for smartphones and tablets, the Wear isn t as customizable. Earlier this year Google had said that it will soon change it. The smartphone app of Wear has also received an update that “makes browsing, downloading, and switching watch faces really easy.” The app also lets users monitor the battery and storage usage by Android Wear apps.
