At its New York event early this week, Google launched a number of new hardware, including a ChromeOS detachable tablet and a pair of Pixel phones. Alongside these new hardware devices, the search giant also announced new software enhancements. Some of these software features will be rolling out in the coming weeks. One feature, named Live Albums in Google Photos, has already begun to roll out for some users.

The feature is a server-side update and will be enabled without need to update to a new version. According to Google, the live albums are albums that are automatically populated by Google’s AI and machine learning algorithms. Inside Photos app, Google is already capable of organizing photos of people and pets, but it now wants to create albums as well. In the case of live albums, you simply chose the people or pets that you want to include in the album and Google will keep it updated with new photos.

Live Albums can be shared with others and collaborated as well. The best use of Live Albums can be seen on smart speaker like Google’s own Home Hub, which was launched alongside the Pixel 3 phones this week.

On Google Home Hub, the Live Albums work as an easy way to display photos that are always up to date. This removes the need for you to go through the album every time you have new photos of a person or your pet. With Live Albums, you can simply snap a picture and be assured that Google will add those pictures to your live albums.

At the time of writing, we could not see Live Albums feature activated but a bunch of reports suggest that the feature is showing up without an app update. However, there is also a new version of Google Photos available from third-party that reportedly enables the feature. It is recommended that you sit and wait for the server-side feature to show up automatically, which shouldn’t take long to show up.
