Google has finally unveiled its 2017-flagship phones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. According to Google, the new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have the best of what Android phones have to offer. The phones come weeks after Apple launched the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. The Pixel 2 has an aluminium body and comes in three colors, black, white and blue, and now has a red power button. The Pixel 2 XL, on the other hand, comes in black and white. While we have already brushed you up with the detailed specifications and features, it’s time we look at the top features of the phones. The LG-made Pixel 2 XL comes with a pOLED display, while there is an AMOLED display on the Pixel 2. The Pixel 2 XL has joined the bezel-less group alongside the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG V30 and LG G6, though it doesn’t look as striking as its competitors. But you do have the 18:9 aspect ratio that makes the screen look taller. Also, the new Pixel phones are waterproof but don’t have 3.5mm headphone jacks. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL feature an Always-On Display feature that shows the time, notifications, and other information.
The camera is one feature that stands out as one of the major highlights in the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, especially after DXOmark gave the Pixel 2 a score of 98. Both the smartphones sport a single 12.2-megapixel f/1.8 rear camera with optical image stabilization. Last year’s Pixel phone missed on OIS features. The Pixel phones notably come without the now fashionable dual-camera setup, unlike much of the competition this year. Google has surely improved the camera on this year’s Pixel phones by including machine learning and algorithms to create a Portrait Mode effect like that on Apple iPhone 8 Plus, but with only one lens. Also added to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL is Motion Photo support. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel camera. The camera on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL has “excellent” auto focus, “very good” white balance and “good detail preservation,” DxOMark said in its review.
Google Assistant/ Android O
The Pure Android experience is surely the most appealing feature about the 2nd gen Pixel devices. While people with other Android devices will have to wait for months for the new update to rollout, Google has promised that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will receive three years of guaranteed software updates. Google’s voice assistant will be present on the new Google Pixel 2-series. It will help users connect with their smart home devices while also offering voice-assistant functionality using the “OK Google” command.
Just squeeze the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL and it ll launch Google Assistant. You can also use the feature for other things, like squeezing to take a selfie or receive incoming calls. This is one feature that Google seems to have taken from HTC. HTC launched the Edge Sense technology with its U11 smartphone which essentially responded to the amount of pressure applied on its edges. The company is adding augmented reality stickers for the Pixel, including official collections of Stranger Things and Star Wars. The AR Stickers, as Google calls it, will remain exclusive to new Pixel devices. The company says its Pixel 2 phones cameras are specifically optimized for high-quality AR. Similar to Google’s DayDream VR platform, it lets you watch League of Legends in augmented reality, and another lets you play with augmented reality Legos, similar to an app that already exists for Google s Daydream VR platform.
