Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL users recently reported poor battery life and device getting warm after updating their devices with February security patch. However, Google Pixel 2 XL owners have another problem that may be more causing a significant impact in way the phone works compared to other problems. Android Police reports that some Pixel 2 XL owners are reporting that the “Charging rapidly” notification on the device is not always accurate. Some users note that the device shows charging rapidly when it is actually charging slow in low temperatures. With smartphone manufacturers struggling to pack dense battery packs on their thin devices, the companies have resorted to the feature allowing fast charging as an alternate option. It is not immediately clear whether the smaller Pixel 2 is also affected by the issue, but the Pixel User Community is complaining about power delivery charging woes with Pixel 2 XL. The issue here is that when the battery temperature of Pixel 2 XL drops below 20 degree celsius, its maximum charging speed drops to 10.5W from 18W that supports rapid charging. The report adds that the device only pulls 3-4W, making the device charge at sub-optimal speeds and offering misleading indication of ‘Charging rapidly’ on the device.

Interestingly, Android Police went ahead and tested to find out how Pixel 2 XL’s charging is affected with temperature. Their test indicates that Pixel 2 XL’s charge drops to around 4W in cold conditions that is around 20 degree celsius or lower while in room temperature it does charge at around 16W. However, it needs to be noted that the test were not conducted in proper lab-controlled conditions but highlights the concern of Pixel 2 XL users.

In comparison, other smartphones such as OnePlus 5T, Google Pixel XL, Essential PH-1 and Nextbit Robin also showed slight drop in charging speed but it wasn’t as substantial as the one seen on Pixel 2 XL. Google has confirmed to Android Police that it is investigating a fix for the UI, which might suggest it will not display ‘Charging rapidly’ indicator but it is not clear whether this has to do anything with the way the device charges.

The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are the search giant’s best bet yet to take on Apple iPhone and Galaxy smartphones by Samsung. While the devices offer best-in class smartphone camera and performance, they are not short of problems which is disappointing considering Google’s larger hardware ambitions.
