Reviews for the Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL have been largely positive so far. But turns out the bigger of the two variants has an issue with its screen that is being reported by early users. Having spent a week or two with the new Pixel 2 smartphones, reviewers have noticed a screen burn-in issue with the display of the XL variant. First reported by Android Central s Alex Dobie, the ghosting issue is related to the software navigation button on the Google Pixel 2 XL. Basically, when one looks at a grey background on the device, faint outlines of the navigation buttons are noticed at the bottom. Dobie says he has used the smartphone for seven full days, and the ghosting issue is quite persistent. Since his tweet, many more have come forth saying that they too are noticing the same issue with their units.
Google responded to these reports in a statement to The Verge. The company s spokesperson said, The Pixel 2 XL screen has been designed with an advanced POLED technology, including QHD+ resolution, wide color gamut, and high contrast ratio for natural and beautiful colors and renderings. We put all of our products through extensive quality testing before launch and in the manufacturing of every unit. We are actively investigating this report.
Now, screen burn-ins are not exactly uncommon issues, but what is worrying is the timing. Usually, such issues take months (if not years), before they show up, but in Google s case, it is happening in a matter of days.
What s even more worrisome is that this isn t the only issue plaguing the new Pixel 2 XL s display. There are reports about weird tints or discoloration seen when the display is seen at particular angles. There are also reports about duller display colors, which can be attributed to Google s decision to tune the display to sRGB. But post complaints, Google is reportedly considering pushing vibrant color options via an update.
