Just like last year, Google has started teasing the launch of its next generation Pixel smartphone. Through a billboard advertised in Boston, Google confirmed the launch of its expected Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL on October 4. The Pixel 2 XL has now appeared in an FCC application filed by LG. Last year, HTC manufactured the Pixel and Pixel XL. This year, the Pixel 2 is said to be built by HTC, while the Pixel 2 XL will be manufactured by LG. First reported by Android Police, the FCC listing doesn t directly mention the Pixel 2 XL, but the model number G011C is the same which was revealed back in June with LG being the manufacturer. Also, the model number is similar to the Pixel 2 spotted on FCC last month. Pixel 2 was listed on FCC with model number G011A; G representing Google here. Unlike the Pixel 2 FCC listing, this one doesn t reveal anything else about the Pixel 2 XL. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will be differ primarily by the display size and few changes under the hood. What s confirmed is that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will run Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box.
Accumulating past reports, the Pixel 2 is expected to feature a 4.97-inch full HD display. On the other hand, the Pixel 2 XL will most likely feature a bigger 5.99-inch quad HD display. The smartphones are also expected to feature Always-On display. In terms of memory, the Pixel 2 could pack 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The Pixel 2 XL is said to come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Both the smartphones will possibly run Qualcomm s Snapdragon 835 SoC under the hood. Many reports suggested the unannounced Snapdragon 836 SoC, but it was confirmed that the chipset isn t in the making as yet. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are also rumored to feature HTC s Edge Sense technology which essentially makes the smartphone squeezable from the sides. This seems quite likely considering the Pixel 2 will be built by HTC. More features include IP68 for water and dust resistant capabilities. This would be a big upgrade from last year s Pixel and Pixel XL which come with IP53 rating for water and dust resistance.
