Google marked its official entry into the smartphone industry last year with its first set of self-branded smartphones, called Pixel and Pixel XL. The first Google-branded smartphones received mostly positive response from critics and users worldwide. Based on the successful start, it is expected that Google will bring three new Pixel devices this year.
Evidently, there will be upgrades to the Pixel and Pixel XL, which will be called the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. However, in addition to these two, it is speculated that there will be a new model, called Pixel 2 XXL. All of these smartphones are codenamed after fishes. It is worth mentioning that when the rumors about Google’s debut self-branded smartphones started off, the internal names of the smartphones were ‘Sailfish’ and ‘Marlin.’
Based on previous reports, it is speculated that Google is working on Pixel devices codenamed ‘Muskie’, ‘Walleye’, and ‘Taiman’. All these codenames refer to aquatic animals and are in line with Google’s previous codenames. While it had been known that there would be multiple Pixel devices, the latest leak reiterates the Google Pixel 2 XXL in-the-making. According to a German site WinFuture, new references in Google’s latest AOSP (Android Open Source Platform) hint at the trio of Pixel 2 codenames as mentioned above. Based on the listing, all the three smartphones are likely to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 SoC, which currently powers the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Xiaomi Mi 6 smartphones. However, this falls in contradiction to earlier reports which claimed that Google is working on a ‘budget’ smartphone which will accompany the Pixel 2 and will be targeted at emerging markets.
Talking about the speculated Google Pixel 2 devices; the ‘Taiman’ model is expected to be the largest of all variants which could be even larger than the Pixel 2 XL. To put into perspective, the current Pixel XL features a 5.5-inch display so we might be looking at something even bigger which could be similar in size as the Samsung Galaxy S8+ with a 6.2-inch display. There have also been rumors about the said device being instead of a laptop or a tablet. However, using a Snapdragon 835 SoC for a tablet or laptop is unlikely. The Pixel and Pixel XL successors, on the other hand, are expected to focus yet again on the camera hardware as Google aims to perfect low-light photography with the next iteration of its self-branded smartphone. In terms of pricing, it is already confirmed by Google that the upcoming Pixel smartphones will continue to be premium.
