An increasing number of smartphone makers are shifting to glass as the preferred material for the back of the devices that they are launching in the market. There are two reasons for the switch; firstly, this allows the device makers to add wireless charging in their flagship devices. The second reason is completely based on cosmetic reasons as glass-back devices look better in comparison to metal devices. This switch has also made the flagship devices more fragile adding the potential of damaging the devices easily. This directly translates to an increase in repair costs for the already expensive devices.

Taking these factors into account along with preliminary reports of the Google Pixel 3 devices getting damaged, popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything detailed a drop test of the device. To make things interesting, Zack, the person responsible for the videos and the channel compared the device with Apple iPhone XR. For context, the iPhone XR is the most affordable model of the iPhone that Apple has launched this year. He conducted eight drop tests for both the devices from varying levels of height to simulate real-world conditions until any of the two showcased serious damage.

He issued a disclaimer in the video that drop tests are not exactly scientific as each drop is different in terms of where the body of the device hits the ground, the material on the ground, the angle of the drop, the times the device flipped in the air.

However, at the end of the results, the Google Pixel 3 barely comes out on the top. The reason for this is because the final drop damaged the back of the iPhone XR while the front had already cracked in previous drops. In the case of the Pixel 3, the previous dropped had shattered the glass on the camera lens while damaging the glass on the top of the device. Zack admitted that he does not conduct that many drop tests as the results are not consistent and instead, he usually focuses on modding videos or regular torture tests.
