Google Pixel 3 bug causes the camera to fail within third-party apps

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are crippled with so many issues that they seem far from flagship experience.

Google’s latest flagship, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, have the best camera yet on any smartphone but what can you do if it fails? That is exactly what is happening to some Pixel 3 users. Unfortunately, some Pixel 3 users are seeing that using the camera with third-party apps triggers an error, which ends up disabling the camera entirely. The only solution to this issue is to completely reboot the device.

Those facing this issue note that the stock camera app is non-functional until you restart the smartphone, which can be quite painful. The issue does not seem to be widespread and to see whether your Pixel 3 is tested, simply open an app that uses camera like Android Messages or Facebook Messenger and try to take a photo.

If your device is affected by this issue then the camera feed just turn black and an error message will appear stating either “Can’t connect to the camera” or “The camera device encountered a fatal error” will appear. This is not the first time that Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL users have reported a camera issue. It was the case with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL last year as well.

One way to fix this issue seems to be rebooting the device but it is a temporary fix that allows the Google Camera app to work again but not a permanent solution. Those who have a device affected by this issue will continue to face this issue every time they try to trigger the camera from a third-party application.

On affected devices, the problem cannot be resolved even by factory rest or full system wipe/restore. The only long-term fix is to not use the camera from a third-party application and entirely disable camera permissions for third-party apps.

“We’ve looked into reports of this issue and have identified a fix that will roll out in the coming weeks,” Google told BuzzFeed in response to this issue.

This issue may not be limited to just the Pixel 3, and even Pixel 2 XL could be affected. Some reports also claim that this issue could potentially go further back. Even older Pixel and Nexus devices could be affected though it is not clear and mainly seems to be caused by Google Camera app. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are affected by so many issues that they suddenly seem to be not worth recommending as a primary device.
