Remember the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition that the Chinese smartphone maker and electronics giant announced earlier this year. The highlight of the device was what seemed to be a transparent glass back that supposedly showed the internals of the device. Though it was later revealed that it was not the real deal and the company was relying on a sticker. But even after that, the idea of being able to use your smartphone and able to see the internals of the device is really cool. This is the entire concept of why iFixit releases the wallpapers of the internals of the device after they are done with their tear-down.
Taking inspiration from the idea of how cool it may look like, some modders have tried to replace the backs of the latest devices in the market with a transparent back. One modder that has been particularly successful is Zack Nelson, the person behind the popular YouTube channel JerryRigEverything. According to the latest video on the channel, he has managed to replace the back of a Google Pixel 3 to make it transparent. This is not the first device that Nelson has turned transparent and previous devices include Vivo NEX S, OnePlus 6 Red Edition, and Samsung Galaxy S9.

Nelson pointed in the video that it was relatively easier for him to turn the device transparent by removing the paint from the glass back. To note the process, he heated the back of the device to separate the back that is secured with adhesive with the help of a suction cup and a razor blade. He disconnected the fingerprint scanner on the back while removing the camera lens and flash diffuser to take the glass back apart and scrape the color off carefully.
Once he cleaned the back of the device, he cleaned the internal side of the device, attached the fingerprint scanner, lens, and flash diffuser to reattach the back of the device. During the process, he did not that the process was simple enough to make it seem like Google was expecting him to make a Clear edition of the device.
The process indicated that it is easy for Google to make a transparent version of the device without making any hardware changes in the device. He also cautioned the users that this process should not be attempted at home and will take away the Water and dust resistance of the device.
