Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL likely to retain squeezable Active Edge feature

Google is likely to retain the Active Edge feature on its upcoming Pixel 3-series.

HTC introduced the squeeze gesture feature on the U11, which allows you to squeeze the sides of the smartphone to carry out different functions. When Google worked with HTC on the Pixel 2 smartphone, it introduced the feature on both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones. The evidence comes from senior XDA Developers member meraz9000 who posted the first ever photos of the Pixel 3 XL prototype. Before he accidentally soft-bricked the device, he reported about testing the Active Edge feature by squeezing the phone from the sides, and it vibrated. After taking a closer look at the Android P developer preview, XDA Developers found WakeMode class within the SystemUIGoogle APK that was modified. It further led to “isWakeSettingEnabled” method, where two device references Crosshatch and Blueline were found in the compatible devices list. These are the alleged codenames for the Pixel 3 smartphones.

Live images of Pixel 3 XL prototype had leaked earlier showing the design in its full glory. The front panel shows that the XL model will come with a notched display, whereas rumors hint that the smaller model will ditch the notch. Also, while dual cameras have now become common, and some upcoming smartphones expected to come with triple camera setup, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will mostly retain the single camera setup.

The Pixel 3-series smartphones will likely be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM, and 128GB onboard storage. Leaks also hint that the Pixel 3 smartphones will come with wireless charging feature. The smartphones are expected to be unveiled sometime in October, and as the launch draws closer, we expect to more details to pour in.
