Google has removed the listing for its first Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones from its online Google Store. Currently, visiting the Google Store will show you only the Google Pixel 2 range in the phones section, with the current range including the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones. It’s worth noting that when logging onto the page from India, you cannot complete a purchase through the Google Store itself. Google instead redirects you to official retailers for the devices, which include Flipkart, Reliance Digital and Croma, among others.
It’s also worth mentioning that removing the listing from the Google Store does not mean that the phone has been discontinued or is unavailable. It is still possible to buy the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones through various online and offline retailers in India, with the phones available at varying prices depending on where you’re shopping. The removal of the listing simply means that Google itself is no longer pushing sales of its older devices, and directing focus onto its recent hardware offerings. The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were launched in October 2017, and subsequently made their way to India.
The strategy comes across as a bit strange, considering that the Google Pixel line-up is meant to rival the Apple iPhone lineup. Apple does not manufacture affordable smartphones in its line-up, focusing entirely on its flagship offerings. However, as new iPhones launch, older models are kept in production to serve as affordable options for users looking to buy Apple smartphones without spending the amount typically associated with a current model.
With that in mind, Google would do well to continue marketing it’s older Pixel phones, offering them as affordable alternatives to the significantly more expensive Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. While the phones aren’t out of production and sale yet, the lack of publicity for the affordable devices to some extent erodes the company’s ability to state that its devices are as long-lasting and capable as Apple’s.

This can also be seen as an indication of a reduction in production and distribution of the older Pixel devices, in order to push sales of the new ones. If you’ve been eyeing a Pixel or Pixel XL, now might be the ideal time to pick it up while it’s still relatively easy to find the device on sale. As we edge closer to the launch of the Pixel 3 range, it might get harder to actually pick up the devices that are now over a year into their product cycle.
