Google released Night Sight for its Pixel smartphones yesterday. While the feature is meant to be used in low-light scenario and in dark environment, it can also come in handy in daylight conditions.

After official roll out, Google revealed that Night Sight can be used in the daytime as well for “denoising and resolution improvements.” The idea seems similar to that of Super Res Zoom, which also uses Google’s HDR+ to zoom in on subjects with improvement in resolution and less noise. The results shared by Google look convincing and much better than standard shots. The only caveat here is that you need to hold your Pixel steady while capturing these images. The details regarding Night Sight’s ability to work even daylight came from a promotional gallery of pictures shot in that mode and put together by Google.

The gallery is home to a number of images taken at night or in conditions with challenging light scenario. The only shot taken in daylight really stands out and shows how Google is pushing the boundaries when it comes to mobile photography.

“If you use Night Sight during the day, and are willing to hold still after shutter press, you’ll get the denoising and resolution improvements of Super Res Zoom, as shown in this landscape shot in Marin County, California,” Google’s Florian Kainz wrote in description for the above image.

We have not been able to test the feature for ourselves but the picture above shot by Google engineers does seem sharper with less noise in the darker areas. It would not have been this sharper with the standard shooting scenario. In the picture above, individual leaves stand out and the camera has even managed to preserve details like distant buildings.

One of the key things to remember is you need really steady hands to capture such an image. The feature is currently rolling out for all the three generation of Pixel smartphones but it will work the best on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. To recall, the Night Sight mode uses multiple burst to selectively expose an image and it captures up to 50 frames for an equivalent exposure of 5 seconds. The feature is meant to revolutionize low-light photography on smartphones.
