Google Pixel, Pixel XL to gain Wi-Fi calling feature on Reliance Jio network

With Reliance Jio, the Pixel and Pixel XL will be the first smartphones to get Wi-Fi calling feature in India.

In December last year, Google rolled out Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, adding HD voice calling (VoLTE) support for Reliance Jio network. Now, the next software update from Google will be adding support for Wi-Fi calling to the Pixels. The feature will only be available for users on Reliance Jio network. While Wi-Fi calling has been available in the US and other countries for a few years now, this will be the first time the feature will make its way to India. Google recently posted Android 7.1.2 Nougat factory images for the Pixels, and the Wi-Fi calling feature will be a part of this update when it hits both the devices in India. It s an incremental update that brings bug fixes and performance improvements in tow. The Android 7.1.2 changelog also mentions about bug fixing where HD Voice and Wi-Fi Calling option was missing. While Google confirmed about the Wi-Fi calling feature coming to Pixels, there is no word on whether it will be made available for Nexus smartphones. What is Wi-Fi calling feature all about?

For those who are not aware of the Wi-Fi calling feature, it is similar to VoLTE HD voice calling feature. However, instead of using the mobile data for placing a call, the feature will use the Wi-Fi network instead. In case of VoIP (voice over internet protocol) based services, such as Skype, Wi-Fi or mobile data is used for making a call, but recipient gets to see your Skype ID. However, in case of Wi-Fi calling, the recipient will be able to see your mobile number, even if you are calling from a Wi-Fi network or hotspot. The feature can come very handy, especially in areas with spotty networks. Now, while local and national outgoing calls are completely free on Reliance Jio network, it will be interesting to see how the Wi-Fi calling feature will be implemented.
