Google is set to launch two new smartphones, dubbed the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, at its annual hardware event on October 9. We have already heard a lot about the upcoming Pixel phones but that is not going to be the only product at the event next month. Alongside the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones, Google is expected to announce a wireless charging accessory called the Pixel Stand.
The Pixel Stand is expected to be similar to a dock where you plug the smartphone for charging. However, the stand will be unique, if latest code inside Google app is anything to go by. A teardown of the latest version of the Google app has given away out first look at the Pixel Stand. According to 9to5Google, the newest version of Google app includes a brief animation, currently hidden from consumer view.
The animation reportedly shows off a phone on a dock going through a slideshow of pictures. This very first look does not offer a look at the product or an upcoming Google flagship smartphone but it does offer a few details. It seems that this dock will work only when the Google Pixel smartphone is connected in portrait orientation.
The new animation spotted within the Google app lines up with previous screenshots that have appeared within the Google Assistant interface, when the phone is connected to the accessory. The animation also hints at Google including some sort of slideshow function that will essentially turn the phone into a digital photo frame when connected to the Pixel Stand. This could be powered by Google Photos app and Google’s Smart Display functionality.
Another animation spotted in another version of the Google app shows that the Pixel Stand will also enable notification functionality. It is likely to show messages, alarms, calendar notifications as well as music. This again resonates with previous leaks which showed Pixel Stand’s Assistant-centric interface.

At I/O 2018, Google showed how Assistant is morphing into central interface for its products. Google has already integrated Assistant deeply within Android and has also added Google Lens into stock camera application. The Pixel Stand might eventually turn any Android smartphone into a smart display sort of device with Assistant becoming single element of the user interface.
The Pixel Stand is expected to be a wireless charging accessory and it is unlikely that the smartphone is docking with the help of USB-C connector not visible in these renders. It seems the dock is being designed mainly to keep the smartphone in portrait mode.
