Google will release the second generation Pixel smartphones later this year. So far, Google has been rumored to launch three smartphones dubbed Pixel 2, Pixel XL 2 and Pixel XXL 2, all varying in size as the names suggest. The three smartphones go by the codenames Walleye, Muskie and Taimen. The Pixel XL 2 codenamed Muskie has now been reportedly been cancelled from the second generation Pixel lineup for this year. According to sources from Android Police, Google has reportedly scrapped the Pixel XL 2 which was supposed to succeed the Pixel XL. Google will still launch two Pixel devices this year, with the smaller variant being the Pixel 2 codenamed Walleye and the Pixel Xl 2 which will now be taken over by Taimen . Originally, Google Pixel XXL 2 Taimen was supposed to be the biggest out of the three. However, there is still no word on how big the screen size for Taimen would be, but it is said to exceed the existing 5.5-inch Pixel XL.
Just yesterday, the Pixel XL 2 showed up on benchmarking website Geekbench. The listing showed a 5.6-inch Pixel XL 2 with Quad HD display resolution. The Google Pixel XL 2 runs on Qualcomm s Snapdragon 835 SoC clocked at 2.35GHz. In terms of memory, the Google Pixel XL 2 will come with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In the photography department, the Google Pixel XL 2 sports a 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Past rumors and leaks have suggested that the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will come with IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Google s latest Pixel smartphones are also said to come with 4K UHD Premium Foveated Rendering, 10-bit 4K @60fps display capabilities, and Q-SYNC for running high-end mobile VR apps. As for the Pixel 2 smartphone, there have been some leaked renders revealing its design and look. While the Pixel 2 retained much of its predecessor s design, the smartphone s display is seen with thinner side bezels. There was also a dual camera setup on the rear end of the Pixel 2 which is said to be a pair of 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel cameras. The Pixel 2 is seen with the same metal and glass body on the rear chassis, and a fingerprint sensor. Going by the schedule, Google should launch the smartphones in October but there hasn t been reports suggesting a delay. With very limited details leaked about the Pixel 2 smartphones, it s advisable to take every bit of information with a grain of salt.
