Google is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Android app marketplace, Play Store. On this special occasion, mobile app analytics firm App Annie studied the app downloads over the past 7 years between, January 2012 and August 2018. India takes the top spot when it comes to app downloads closing in to 36.9 billions.
Global downloads during the same period were 330 billion, with India alone accounting for 11.2 percent share. The United States takes the second spot with 35.1 billion downloads during the same period, followed by Brazil with 25.2 billion downloads. The fourth and fifth spot is taken by Russia (15.9 billion downloads), and Indonesia (14.6 billion downloads), respectively.
On a yearly basis, India took the top spot from 2016 with highest download numbers. The US and Brazil were ahead of India before that. If the Google Play Store and Apple App Store downloads are taken into account, India ranks number 2, whereas China leads the pack. India beat the US to take the second spot in 2017. However, the US and China remain big app download markets for Apple, compared to India.
In terms of spending, Indians prefer free apps over paid ones. Japan takes the top spot with $25.1 billion dollars spent by users to get paid apps, followed by the US ($19.3 billion), South Korea ($11.2 billion), Germany (3.1 billion) and Taiwan ($2.7 billion). Surprisingly, India doesn’t event make it to the top 10 when it comes to app spend.
App Annie also reveals that on an average, Indians download 62 apps, with roughly 35 being the most active used apps, and India ranks 11th on this measure. This is likely because of low phone storage. The top spot is taken by Australia with 103 apps downloads and 39 actively used apps, followed by Americans with 102 apps downloads and 37 actively used ones.
Lastly, the firm has also revealed the top apps and games on the download charts. Globally, Subway Surfers, Candy Crush Saga, My Talking Tom, Pou, Fruit Ninja and Temple Run 2, are the most popular games. Talking about in-app purchases, Puzzle & Dragons, Monster Strike, Clash of Clans, Candy Crush Saga, make it to the top list.
In case of worldwide numbers, Facebook is the most downloaded app followed by WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Clean Master, UC Browser, Skype, Snapchat and ShareIt. Top paid apps include Line, Tinder, Pandora Music, Line Manga, Netflix, KakaoTalk, Line Play and HBO Now.
