This time around, Google is going with a slightly different approach by setting a new quarterly maintenance schedule. Also, while the developer preview program is here to stay, Google has already started working on the next preview version, which is due to release this fall. “Android 7.0 Nougat will begin rolling out to users, starting with Nexus devices. At the same time, we’re pushing the Android 7.0 source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), extending public availability of this new version of Android to the broader ecosystem,” Dave Burke, VP of Engineering, Android, wrote in a blog post. The range of supported devices includes the current flagship smartphones Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, and Nexus 6, Nexus 9, the Nexus Player and the Pixel C tablet. However, sad news for Nexus 5 owners, as the smartphone has hit end of life and will remain on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1.

Manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, HTC and Xiaomi among others, will also be treating their supported smartphones with goodness of Android 7.0 Nougat. However, due to the over the top customizations that OEMs put, it may take a couple of months or more till the update is ready to be rolled out. As of now, LG G5, HTC 10, One M9,One A9, Samsung Galaxy S7-family, Galaxy Note 7, Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus, Moto Z and Moto Z Force have been announced to get the update in the coming months.
