A major part of Google s revenues comes from its ads, the ones that show up on its own services and the ones on third-party websites that run Google ads. Google’s Adsense has been though criticized for several reasons including for tracking users online. Now, Google looks to tweak this by giving users more control on ads they see. It recently made a big change to its ads settings, allowing users to customize the ads that show up on their screens. Effectively, the new tool from Google will give users the discretion as to what ads show up on their screen, and the control to manage the information Google can use to show ads. Along with that Google has also made this feature completely an opt-in. This means that the new search lets users manually put in the topics of interest, their age and gender to see what advertisements cater to them on different Google services used by them. However, if a user chooses not to, they can restrict Google from accessing their information and search details to look for ads for them. Having said that, if a user switches on this setting, it is important to understand that with personalized Google ads, they also give the company the permission to use their activity on Google accounts on its services. This includes allowing Google to track how a user interacts with ads and with what all kinds of ads do they respond to, which would now be added to its new My Activity site.
My Activity keeps a track of what all a user searches for, visits and watches on all the Google services. This allows Google to analyse the ads that a user would like to see. However, as mentioned earlier, with the new feature, Google gives users the control to delete or keep specific items or entire topics. They can also make changes in settings and take a call as to what data will be associated with your account.
Google is rolling out this new feature via Chrome and Gmail to all users. However, in case of not having received the settings tool yet, users can access the Ads personalization page here. If a user wants everything to remain how it has been until now, then they must let the boxes be checked the way they are, or they can simply choose to select and unselect topics to personalize the ads.
