Google Sans font being implemented for some users for Search results on mobile devices

The font is already in place on some of Google's apps and services, including Gmail, Google Drive and Google News.

After implementing its Google Sans font on some of its web and mobile-based applications, Google is slowly rolling out the font on mobile devices for results using the Search product as well. The roll-out isn’t widespread for now, leading to speculation that it could still be in the testing phase. Google Sans is a sight variation of Product Sans, the font that Google uses for its current logos.

The font is already in place in a lot of the company’s apps and services, including the web versions of Gmail, Google Drive and Google News, among others. Enabling the font on Google Search will be a big step towards implementing the new font and design language, as Search is by far the most widely used Google product today. The reports suggest that the font is only being tested on mobile browser versions of Google Search for the time being; the web browser version still has the traditional font in place.

A font implementation such as this can only be done on web versions, since a browser can load fonts as they are displayed on websites. On Android, apps use the default font of the smartphone, unless the app is specifically set to fetch fonts from the page itself. As such, the use of Google Sans is thus limited to web-browser based use. For this reason, opening Gmail, Google News or Google Drive on Chrome browser on Windows allows the use of the Google Sans font.

Google Sans is part of the company’s latest image redesign, and is slowly being implemented across Google’s range of products. If you want a good idea of what the font looks like right now, log in to your Gmail account from a browser on your PC. We’re expecting it to fully roll out for all mobile devices soon, considering that testing is already on.
