With the upcoming smartphones, Google is believed to be ending the Nexus lineup and opting for the ‘Pixel’ moniker instead. If all the reports are to be believed, Google will be launching the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones at its event on October 4. Besides just changing the brand though, Google also seems to be taking control of other aspects as well, including marketing. Talking of marketing, reports are surfacing about mysterious Google ads cropping up in certain cities in the US. One of these ads include a huge statue which is akin to what we see on the micro site made for the Pixel smartphones. The Verge reports that the statue with the date Oct 4, the smartphone in the middle and the Google logo with the hashtag #MadeByGoogle below. Another ad shows a big sheet rolled out displaying the same. There s another ad reported which is in an LED form displaying the same. It is a clear enough hint that the outline of the smartphone is belongs to either the Google Pixel or Google Pixel XL. The interesting bit here is that Google has never before hyped a smartphone to this extent before, and its efforts have got people talking and have also got people more excited than ever to see what the company has to offer.
Unlike before, Google is overseeing a lot of aspects of its upcoming smartphones, and it is in line with what CEO Sundar Pichai had said earlier this year. Pichai said that Google will have more say on its smartphones, and it will be more opinionated about them. In line with this strategy, earlier this year Google also hired former Motorola-chief Rick Osterloh who now heads an unified hardware division.
Though leaked photos only show the ‘G’ logo, this year’s Pixel smartphones are believed to be manufactured by HTC. This is also the first time Google’s smartphones won’t be running on stock Android as the company will be adding a few features, which are not be available on other smartphones.
As far as its features are concerned, Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL have so far not been known to feature something new or different. The latest reports suggest that the Google Pixel and Google Pixel could be water-resistant with IP53-level certification. This means that the smartphones will be water-resistant at a very low pressure and only if the device is held at a vertical angle. So the water-resistant feature seems disappointing. But considering how Google is really going all in for its upcoming smartphones, we can surely expect something new and exciting.
Accumulating all the rumors and leaks, we can expect the Google Pixel to feature a 5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) display. Under the hood a Snapdragon 820 chipset is expected to run. The smartphone could come with 4GB of RAM and 32GB onboard storage. It could sport a 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. A fingerprint scanner at the back is also expected along with a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack.
