Google is all set to release voice-based turn-by-turn navigation in India, considering Google India has posted a video demoing the same. So far Google Maps provided passive navigation service with no voice commands. The update has not gone live yet as our Android smartphones still show “Navigation is not available for this location” error but we can expect it to go live at any moment. This would be one of the biggest updates Google Maps has received in India. Earlier, Google added public transport routes for a few cities. The presence of voice navigation for free could be a huge setback for companies like MapmyIndia and TomTom that charge a premium for their services. However, Google Maps does not give voice navigation in offline mode, which is one of the key features of the other two and even Nokia Maps.
