Google is reportedly working on a smart device with a display to take on the Amazon Echo Show. The Amazon Echo Show is essentially a tabletop device with a screen, speaker and smart functionality. Google’s project for this device is called ‘Manhattan’, and will possibly have a display size of 7 inches, TechCrunch reports.

In terms of features, the Google Manhattan is said to come with apps such as YouTube and Google Photos, in addition to video-calling support. This device is also expected to act as a smart home control for other products such as the Google Nest, and will be powered by Google Assistant. With the device currently being worked on, Google could be launching its smart screen device around mid-2018. Google is also said to be partnering with Best Buy Geek Squad and Enjoy for installation purposes.

The smart screen device is rumored to run on Android OS so that third party developers can build apps for it. Among the possible app developers, Netflix is expected to be available on this device. With a good number of months still left for its expected launch, details should be revealed eventually, and as of now all of this information is pure speculation.

Amazon launched the Echo Show earlier this year in May, which is priced at $230 (approximately Rs 15,000). The Echo Show features a 7-inch screen, and is powered by an Intel Atom processor. It is equipped with Dolby dual speakers, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth. The Echo Show also works as a smart hub for other smart home products. ALSO READ: Amazon launches new Echo devices, Fire TV: Price, specifications, features

As the race for smart home products picked up this year with Apple’s HomePod and future Cortana-powered speakers, more manufacturers are joining in. Facebook is also rumored to launch an Amazon Echo-like device for video chat. The project is codenamed Aloha and is expected to be unveiled by May 2018.
