Google has expanded its Android Auto service to India and 17 other countries such as Austria, Brazil, Colombia and Switzerland. Google had introduced the Android Auto service last year. Similar to Apple‘s CarPlay, Android Auto is designed to project your smartphone’s features to easy-to-access touchscreen unit within your car’s dashboard. Useful information such as navigation, voice calls and music streaming are organized into simple cards allowing you to focus on driving without missing out on key information.

How Android Auto works?

To begin with Android Auto, you need to have a compatible vehicle or aftermarket stereos and Android smartphone running version 5.0 or higher. Second thing you need is the Android Auto companion app, which is available from Google Play store for smartphone running version 5.0 or higher. Also, you need to have a USB cable.

To set up, connect your Android smartphone with the car via the USB cable. You may require to update or download certain compatible applications. Google will prompt you to accept to turn on notifications in Android Auto to show important information such as calendar events, incoming calls and texts on the screen. Bluetooth is automatically enabled on using Android Auto. Follow the instructions to get started.

You can also use Google Now voice assistant for accessing the features. It is worth pointing out that Android Auto also supports a number of third party applications such as WhatsApp, Skype and Telegram.

Which cars support Android Auto?

Android Auto is compatible with a number of cars, mostly new, across different brands. You can check out the entire list here. It may be recalled that Mahindra XUV 500 was the first Indian car to come with Android Auto support. Mahindra is also offering the same with its new Scorpio. Hyundai will soon launch its 2017 Elantra variant with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. Other brands such Skoda and Honda are likely to make the feature available through a software update. Moreover, Pioneer and Kenwood have already launched the Android Auto compatible aftermarket car audio systems. It is highly likely Pioneer will soon launch these devices in India.
