Yandex, which claims to be Russia’s numero uno online search engine, has acquired SPB Software, the makers of popular Android and Symbian 3D UI app, SPB Shell 3D. SPB Software has 75 employees with Offices in Russia, Taiwan and Thailand. Yandex will integrate its cloud and search services into SPB Shell 3D app. While it is unlikely to become a competition to Google’s Android at the moment, Yandex could very well create a smartphone or a tablet using Android as the core OS with a heavily customized UI and online services, just like Amazon has done with its Kindle Fire tablet. Such devices could then be targeted at Yandex’s key market of Russia and some Russian-speaking neighboring countries.
