GoPro has added a new entry-level Hero camera to its family of action cameras. The new Hero is priced at Rs 18,990, and will be available exclusively from Flipkart. The Hero joins Hero5 priced at Rs 28,000, and Hero6 priced at Rs 37,000. GoPro says the new Hero is a go-anywhere, capture-anything camera that makes it easy to share experiences that would be difficult to capture with a smartphone. With Hero, GoPro is delivering on the entry-level action camera that its CEO Nick Woodman has been promising for a few months. The new Hero looks exactly like the more expensive Hero5 and Hero6, but it falls behind in terms of performance. The new Hero can’t shoot 4K or super-slow-motion footage, and its maximum resolution is capped at 1440p at 60 frames per second. It captures 10-megapixel photos, down from 12-megapixel on its premium siblings. One of the major differences is that Hero uses an Ambarella chip, which limits it to one burst shooting option of 10 frames per second, and one time lapse setting of 0.5 seconds per shot. The GoPro Hero6 does have better shooting options thanks to its custom-built image processor called the GP1. The new Hero, like other Hero devices, features a 2-inch touchscreen display with support for voice control and digital video stabilization. It is waterproof up to 30 feet and since it is designed with the same basic shape, the new Hero fits into the same mounts and works with same accessories as well. “HERO is a great first GoPro for people looking to share experiences beyond what a phone can capture,” says Meghan Laffey, GoPro’s SVP of Product. “HERO makes it easy to share ‘wow’ moments at a price that s perfect for first-time users.”
GoPro is going through a major transition where it announced a new round of layoffs, and its CEO Woodman has been vocal that 2018 will be an important year to reset expectations. The company tried to take on DJI with its Karma drone but had to recall, and seems to have abandoned the plan altogether. Now, with new Hero, GoPro is trying to do what it does best make a really interesting and easy to use action camera.

GoPro plans to add more new cameras this year but it will also continue to sell Hero5, Hero5 Session and Hero6 alongside Hero. The company seems to have pinned on the idea that consumers will buy action cameras provided the cost becomes more accessible. The Hero announced yesterday removes the entry barrier and attract new customers.
