Smartbands and activity trackers are all the rage these days but today a new brand has entered the space that promises to change the industry. GOQii, founded by Vishal Gondal (who earlier founded Indiagames that was acquired by Disney), is a smartband that provides personal coaching along with tracking key activity measures. Like any other smartband, the GOQii (pronounced as go-key) tracks the steps you take, calories you burn, your total active period and sleeping patterns. The key differentiation between GOQii and other activity trackers is it allocates personal coaches to its users that interpret your data and suggest what you should do next. The coaches will observe your habits and would help you change them to achieve better fitness. Users will be able to interact with their coaches over instant messenger or even pre-scheduled audio or video calls. This, the company believes, will make a big difference considering most people wearing smartbands these days are only tracking their activity rather than acting upon any of the data metrics they generate. Gondal has an enviable set of investors in the venture, including Google’s search guru Amit Singhal, Flextronics CEO Mike McNamara, Basis Band co-founder Bharat Vasan, Seagate’s former CEO and current Chairman Steve Luzco as well as Bollywood superstar, Madhuri Dixit-Nene and her surgeon husband Dr Shriram Nene, among others. GOQii is being sold as a service rather than a hardware accessory. It is almost like a gym membership, where you can buy a 6-month membership for Rs 5,999 or an annual membership for Rs 9,999. Users will be able to renew their subscription when it expires or can continue to use the smartband without personal coaching. You can pre-order your GOQii now in India and deliveries will start in April. The company will also launch it in Singapore, UAE, USA and UK.
