Last month, in a meeting called by the joint secretary in the ministry of electronics and IT, Rajiv Bansal, with the executives of Google, Microsoft and Rediff, the government asked email service providers to enable users to create email address in a local Indian language, of course starting with Hindi. “The Bharat Net project will connect 250,000 gram panchayats through high-speed internet in the next few years, and people should be able to utilize it when it reaches them. How many people in India can actually type in or read English? the newspaper reported Bansal as saying. Additionally, Microsoft said that the latest version of its software, such as the Internet Explorer, Edge and Outlook, all support Internationalized email address. Google, on the other hand, says it started recognizing IDs that contained non-latin characters like in Chinese or Devanagri since 2014. A Rediff executive, on the other hand, said that it is simple to implement this with the given technology, but if the government really wants to make internet accessible for the masses in the rural, the cost of access must be brought down.
There’s currently no official announcement on when this will be implemented. However, when it does, it will be a brilliant move. How much ever popular English may be in India, our primary language is not English. Being able to create email address in our own language, would make web so much more comfortable and accessible for many users in the country.
