As the World Cup gets well and truly underway, it is raining World Cup apps. After the likes of NDTV, ESPN Cricinfo and Yahoo!, it is now the chance of Indian tech major to come out with an app dedicated to covering the tournament. Called XPlore Cricket WC2011, it is available for iOS (iPhone, iPod touch and iPad) and Android devices and like most of the apps dedicated to the tournament, is available for free download from the iTunes App Store and the Android Market. We gave the app a run on our Motorola Milestone and iPhone 3GS and must confess to feeling underwhelmed, given that the app comes from one of India’s leading tech brands. Yes, the app ticks off all the major bases – schedule, teams, player information, news and the like – but the overall execution is a tad on the ordinary side. The layout is drab, with the home screen showing you different stages of the tournament instead of the latest news and match updates. News, for some reason, comes under the ‘Live’ tab and clicking on the a news item takes you to a detailed story from the CricandCric website, which is not formatted for the phone display and from which returning to the app home page (leave alone the News section) seems next to impossible. We also feel that the ‘The Brand’ section could have been avoided, or at least not been displayed so prominently, as cricket fans are unlikely to want to read about HCL while checking out the latest from the tournament. On the plus side, the team and player profiles are adequate and the venue information handy. We loved the ‘What’s NearBy???’ option in ‘Venues,’ giving details of eateries, tourist spots and hotels near the stadia, although we did not quite get the logic of THREE question marks. Still, all said and done, we honestly did not see much here to sway us from our NDTV and ESPN Cricket apps.
