Facebook has revealed that nearly 864 million users accessed the social networking site every day in September, out of which 703 million users accessed it on their mobile phones. In its third quarter earnings report, Facebook also revealed it now had 1.35 billion monthly active users, out of which almost 83 percent or 1.12 billion users came from mobile phones. Facebook’s revenues from mobile advertising now accounts for 66 percent of advertising revenue in the quarter, up from approximately 49 percent in the same quarter last year. While these are certainly impressive numbers, what makes Facebook’s mobile credentials even stronger is that it had 456 million monthly active users at the end of the third quarter that accessed Facebook only from their mobile phones. Facebook defines mobile-only monthly active users as those “who accessed Facebook solely through mobile apps or mobile versions of our website, or used our Messenger app, in the last 30 days of the given quarter.” This number does not include Instagram users unless they would otherwise qualify as such users based on their other activities on Facebook. Obviously, this number doesn’t include WhatsApp users either, which had announced having 600 million monthly active users sometime back. The 1.35 billion monthly active users is up 14 percent year-over-year, and the company also revealed that in September this year, nearly 864 million were daily active users, which is a 19 percent rise year-over-year. To put Facebook’s user base into perspective, it now has nearly as many users as there are people in China, where ironically it is banned. It is however relatively slow on a quarter-over-quarter basis. In comparison to the 3.125 percent growth in Q2, this quarter only saw an increase of 2.27 percent.
