In the latest WhatsApp update version 2.18.109, the ‘mysterious bug’ is making the sent date or day appear incorrectly inside the app. In the main chat window, next to your list of active conversations is the time or day the last message was exchanged. Owing to the bug, if the last message was exchanged in less than an hour (60 minutes) of time, then it is shown correctly. However, for messages which are exchanged more than 60 minutes ago, it is shown as 84oday, instead of ‘Today’. For messages which are exchanged a day before, the timestamp is shown as 89esterday and not ‘Yesterday’. Essentially, the bug is adding digits before the words ‘today’ or ‘yesterday’. According to a report on WABetaInfo, the issue is impacting only the sent day stamp. It is unclear as to what is causing the bug. Users, who are on beta versions, have taken to social media to highlight the issue. A Twitter user, Federico Sabbioni, has pointed out that first character of the ‘sent day’ is being replaced by the ASCII code of that letter.
I got it. 😀 The number is the ASCII code of the first letter. pic.twitter.com/pyNTnsBtTB

The ASCII code for the alphabets T and Y are represented by 84 and 89, respectively. This is the reason why the words ‘Today’ and ‘Yesterday’ appear cryptic. Given that the issue plagues the beta version, it is expected that the company will roll out a fix before the new update reaches the masses.
