Water resistance in smartphones is turning out to be a differentiating feature when most smartphone hardware specifications are more or less the same. Samsung has added the feature in its flagship Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, while Motorola has always had some sort of water resistance via nano coating. Even the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have better water resistance and the iPhone 7 is rumored to be waterproof. Meanwhile, Xiaomi doesn’t have any waterproof smartphone and the company doesn’t have any plans to bring it either. Here’s what Xiaomi founder Lei Jun had to say about it. At an official press event in China, Jun cleared that air as to why Xiaomi doesn’t add water and dust resistant capabilities on its smartphones. Firstly, when a smartphone falls down and gets damaged, the waterproofing capabilities also tend to deteriorate, TechWeb reports. So, even if users accidentally happen to drop the smartphone, the sealant used to resist water from entering the circuit board may not work as expected. Secondly, adding waterproofing capabilities to smartphones also increases the manufacturing cost of smartphones by 20-30 percent. If users are ready to pay that extra cost, the company might think of adding waterproofing to the smartphones, Jun added. However, until that happens, Xiaomi won’t think of making their smartphones water and dust resistant. Also Read - Mi Mix 4 launch on August 10; a day ahead of Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event
It is important to note that current smartphones with IPXX certification aren’t completely waterproof, but can resist water for up to 30 minutes under 1.5-meters of water. And while the feature isn’t a big deal, it is always better to have some sort of protection if you happen to accidentally spill water or coffee over it, or if it suddenly starts pouring.
