It is November 18 and you know what it means – iPhone 4S pre-orders go live on Aircel. Naturally, I went to Aircel’s iPhone 4S page soon after midnight to figure out the deal whether it was an actual pre-orders where buyers have to commit some money or a simple registration where one has to enter an email address, which usually never lever leads to a reply. However, this was not what I expected to see on the page – Aircel has removed any mention of pre-orders! Instead, the site mentions the iPhone 4S is coming on November 25 and is teasing the carrier’s “attractive” plans. Below it is a mention for corporate queries for iPhone. No mention whatsoever about pre-orders. Mind you, Aircel might flip the pre-order switch later in the day but don’t really get your hopes high. I worked some numbers (yeah, I do bother some of my sources post midnight) and though none could confirm whether Aircel has pulled off its iPhone 4S pre-order campaign or not, I did get some insights of what could have happened if they indeed have had second thoughts. One thing that most of them told me was Aircel jumped the gun with its iPhone 4S announcement. Apple probably had not authorized either carrier to announce iPhone 4S launch date and initiate pre-orders. This could also explain why Airtel did not announce anything on the same day as Aircel. Airtel has a simple registration page where consumers interested in buying the iPhone 4S can enter their contact information and wait for Airtel to get in touch with them when the time comes. Another thing I have been hearing all this week is Apple has not yet approved any tariff plans sent by the carriers. This was the status till November 16. If the plans have still not been approved, it is highly unlikely for Aircel to go ahead with pre-orders. How can one expect consumers to commit money when they do not know what they are getting into? At the moment, I am willing to give Aircel the benefit of doubt. After all, things can change in the morning. Right now there is no iPhone 4S pre-order page on Aircel’s site but it could be flipped on later in the day. I am not sure Aircel would have expected a crazy blogger to log on to their site at midnight in hopes of pre-ordering an iPhone 4S!
UPDATE: Aircel’s site is down. Hopefully, the pre-orders should go live later in the day.
