HMD Global launched five new mobile phones at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona last month. The Finnish company launched Nokia 1, Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 8 Sirocco, and Nokia 8110 4G at the event. At the launch, it said all these devices will arrive in India starting April. HMD Global has already launched the Nokia 1 based on Android Oreo (Go edition) in India at Rs 5,499 and it might be planning to launch other devices on April 4. The company has sent out media invites for an event in New Delhi where it is expected to announce its 2018 smartphone lineup for the Indian market. The invite comes with tagline, “We welcome you to discover the N-powered city of tomorrow”, which strongly indicates the launch of next set of Nokia-branded smartphones. The invite also comes with a cryptic message, “We welcome you to Explore. Express. Create. Reimagine”. Reading between the lines, the message hints at story-telling and photography, which is focus of these new smartphones.
The new Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco launched at MWC 2018 were focused on offering great camera experience. The Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco feature dual rear camera setup with Zeiss optics, and a combination of 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 13-megapixel secondary telephoto sensor. Both devices support 2x optical zoom and feature electronic image stabilization. The Nokia 7 Plus gets a 16-megapixel selfie camera, while Nokia 8 Sirocco has a 5-megapixel front shooter.
In terms of specifications, the Nokia 7 Plus features a 6-inch Full HD+ display with bezels, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC. Nokia 8 Sirocco, on the other hand, features a smaller 5.5-inch Quad HD display with thinner bezels but old school 16:9 aspect ratio. It offers 6GB RAM, 128GB storage and uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform.
In addition to these two devices, HMD Global might also make Nokia 6 (2018) available in India. As the name implies, the Nokia 6 (2018) is an updated version of last year’s model with faster Snapdragon 630 SoC, 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage. It gets a 16-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel secondary camera.
Interestingly, all these smartphones are based on Google’s Android One program, which will allow for faster and secure updates on a regular interval. HMD Global already had a proven record with software updates and by joining hands with Google, the Finnish company’s devices could be the first to get software update directly from Google.
Since its entry into the smartphone market last year, the Finnish company has had a phenomenal ride. A Counterpoint Research report estimated that it to have captured a market share of around one percent in first six months of selling smartphones globally. The new smartphones will help HMD Global better compete with Chinese brands like Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi and also strengthen its place in the premium segment where Samsung, Apple and OnePlus have a stronghold.
